What was the reason for using two remaining teeth (#11,12)as abutments with using magnetic attachments despite the presence of periodontal pockets of more than 3 mm?

Thank you very much for your question. First of all, to prevent the residual ridge resorption in the upper anterior region due to the functional stress loaded from antagonist (lower anterior teeth), we kept the roots of #11, 12, and 13. Meanwhile, we supposed that the deep undercut of residual ridge would be a disadvantage for achievement of upper overdenture stability. Therefore, we wanted to obtain the retention of upper overdenture by the application of some coping-type attachments. However, all of the upper anterior teeth showed deep pocket. Within several coping type attachments, magnetic attachment would be less harmful for weakened teeth. That is why we decided to apply magnetic attachments for those weakened upper anterior teeth.
